You also have to make sure that there is nothing that comes in the way of your gutters. When the gutters overflow, the water will go to all directions and they wills surely end up down the foundation.

Always remember that you should never underestimate what water can do to your property. It will always try to get in and the moment that you forget this is the moment that you start dealing with grave problems.

Control Your Own Power

There is no doubt that we depend on electricity to get through the day, and that dependence grows each year.  From keeping food fresh to lighting our homes at night, there isn’t an hour in the day that we are not using electricity for something.

What happens when the power goes out during a storm or when power lines are downed by an accident?  Many people worry if the outage is going to be temporary, a few minutes or a few hours, or more permanent.  Just ask the people in Florida after Hurricane Katrina who were told repeatedly that their power would be on “this week”.  “This week” turned into 3 months for many of them and their daily lives were disrupted significantly.  People lost thousands of dollars of food in their refrigerators.  Many more experienced damage to their homes from mold growth due to no air conditioning.

No matter where you live in the country, you need power to carry on a relatively normal life.  While battery backups are a good idea for sump pumps and security systems, these batteries don’t run for more than a few hours or a couple of days, leaving your home vulnerable to water damage or safety threats.  Your refrigerator doesn’t have a battery backup, nor does your HVAC system.

The answer to keeping your normal lifestyle during a power outage is home generators.  A backup generator permanently wired into your home’s electrical system ensures that if power goes out, your lights, your heating and air conditioning, your security system, your garage door and all your media devices will be able to work properly and indefinitely.  Generators use propane or natural gas as their source of fuel.  These fuel sources can power a generator indefinitely until utility electrical power is restored.

4 green insulation materials that will keep you warm and safe

You can stay warm this winter in some ways. Installing green insulation in your home is one choice you have. Fiberglass is used in many homes, but it may cause respiratory problems. Here are the four best green insulation materials for your home.

Polyurethane Foam

img14It is a durable polymer having various uses. It is made of foam for providing home insulation. It provides enough heat resistance, and it’s R-value is 5 to 6 per inch. It is a good choice for attics and basement walls. Some polyurethane foams are made from vegetable oil instead of petroleum. The material’s rigidity can improve the overall structural integrity of the house. In new homes, structural insulated panels (SIPs) are the most recommended options. The polyurethane foam is inserted between two boards.

img15This material expands to 10 times its initial volume. It also stops air in its tracks. It is used as water-based foam insulation for filling the cavities of a home. It looks similar to whipped cream when installed. It traps air, but can capture moisture too. So, builders have to install a ventilation and air exchange system. It’s R-value ranges up to 3.7 per inch. It can act as a noise buffer and will last a long time. It is a delicate material and must be handled by professionals only.

img16It is made of recycled newspaper. It is the ultimate green insulation for your home. Its R-value is 3.5 per inch and is similar to that of fiberglass. Cellulose has the same advantages of a fiberglass. But unlike fiberglass, it doesn’t contain formaldehyde and harmful fire retardants. It offers better resistance against air leaks. It is a much affordable green insulation options available now.

Sheep’s Wool

img17Sheep’s wool is a natural and renewable source of insulation. It captures air, and the wool retains its breathability. Its R-value is up to 4 and the insulation is fire-resistant. It retains heat and takes moisture as well. Unlike Icynene, no protective gear is needed to be installed. It is a good option for DIY projects. Wool expands over time and absorbs damaging chemicals that may lie in between the walls.

Well-placed insulation can prevent air from getting into the house through your windows. Good insulation keeps your home warm in winter and cool in summer. By using the green material, you will have an eco-friendly home. Having good insulation is essential for having an energy efficient house. Proper insulation can save a lot of money on your energy bills. The commercially available insulation materials may contain harmful chemicals which may have an adverse effect on our health. These green materials are harmless and will keep us healthy all the time.

4 ways to lower your energy bills

The energy bills are a major portion of our monthly expense. With some smart moves, you can lower your energy bills every month and save a lot of money. Here are some tips for you.

Add insulation

img12Though you spend a lot of money on heating your home during winter, must of the heat may get lost due to poor insulation of your home. There are many types of insulation. If insulation is installed in your attic, it will prevent rising heat from leaving your house. You can have insulation on your walls, basement, floors, etc.

Paint the roof white

img10If you are living in an extremely hot climate, then it can be expensive to cool down your home. If you color your roofs white, it will cost you 40% less to cool your home compared to those that are painted black. You don’t need to install an entire roof for it. You can easily paint your black roof with a white waterproof elastomeric coating.

Lower the water heater’s temperature

Many water heaters have a temperature of 140 degrees Fahrenheit. You can lower that temperature to make your home more energy efficient. You can set your water heater temperature to 120 degrees Fahrenheit. This temperature is sufficient to do laundry, shower and run the dishwasher. It will save you money throughout the year.

Replace old windows

img11Heat might be escaping, or cool air may be entering your house through your window. You may caulk around the window to reduce draftiness and retain energy. Installing new windows with better insulation is a good option. You can install double or triple pane windows that will cut your energy bills.

3 reasons you should add insulation to your house

Your house must be well insulated; else there may be lots of problems. If there is no insulation, your home may become too hot or too cold. It can affect your energy bills significantly. Here are the reasons why you should insulate your home.

Reducing energy bills

img6If you have a good heating and cooling system and if your windows are in good shape, then insulation is the reason why you have high energy bills. Your HVAC system has to work more to keep the home at the desired temperature if your home is poorly insulated. In an uninsulated home, heat seeps into your home in summer, and cold air gets in during winter.

Rooms on the top floors are warmer in summer

img7In the summer months, the upper levels of your home have more heat and humidity. If the temperature difference is between 10-15 degrees, then you know that it is due to poor insulation. If you have inconsistent temperatures around your house, then your HVAC system has to work harder, and this will increase your energy bills.

Freezing pipes in the winter months

img5If your house is insulated properly, then frozen pipes shouldn’t be a problem. If there is any problem, then you lack insulation in the walls of your home and attic. You shouldn’t wait too long to solve the problem. If you wait too long, your frozen pipes may burst, causing a mess and costing lots of money to fix it.

So, properly insulating your home is very important for reducing your energy bills and also to live comfortably in your house. If you haven’t insulated your home yet, you should do in immediately.

4 drawbacks of spray foam insulation

Homes that are insulated with spray foam insulation are very effective. If installed properly, they can outperform 99% of fiberglass batt-insulated, stick-build homes. Spray foam is both insulation and an air barrier. So, proper alignment of insulation and air barrier is ensured. But there is no guarantee that all spray foam will be comfortable and efficient. Here are some drawbacks of using spray foam.

Not very thick

img2Spray foams can be of two types: open cell foam and closed cell foam. The thickness of the spray foam is not sufficient for both types of foam. Open cell foam fills the framing cavity entirely. So, you can tell if the installer has sprayed enough. The closed cell foam doesn’t fill the cavity, so you need to check in various places to see if things are in place.

Poor installation

Sometimes, the installers may miss some of the air leakage sites. So, if spray foam is not insulated properly, it won’t provide the insulation you are expecting.

Not spraying the right amount

If the installers don’t have a good understanding about the building envelope, they won’t be able to spray evenly throughout the surface. Some places will be sprayed either too much or too little. If the installer misses some area, there will be a lack of insulation.

It contracts and pulls away from framing

Due to improper mixing, bad chemicals, and high temperature, the spray foam may contract or pull away from framing.
So, installation of spray foam is very important. If not properly applied, you will lose heat and your home will become uninsulated.
